Economic Sustainability
By bringing you products directly from people in developing countries, Benevolent Bean extends the real economic advantages of the marketplace to those in greatest need that are kept out of the marketplace. In our visits to Ethiopia, a key issue for the farmers and workers at the processing plant is the ability to economically sustain the most essential needs of human life. As its primary focus, Benevolent Bean is dedicated to assisting these wonderful people with health, education, and economic viability.

Finest Coffee
Known as the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia produces several distinct single origin coffees including Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Harrar. Grown on small farms, coffee is the main export of Ethiopia as well as a strong element in Ethiopian culture. When you experience the best of these coffees, nothing else will compare. Benevolent Bean presents only the best of these varieties. In addition, our expert roasters product three blends through combining these varieties in new ways bringing distinctly enjoyable qualities to our coffee.

In July of 2003, we had the opportunity to meet Werku Golle, a wonderful leader to the Gedeo people of southern Ethiopia.  Speaking with him made us all aware of the power and influence of one committed individual.  Imprisoned during the Communist takeover of Ethiopia, he is now working for the betterment of his people in many areas, including health, education, and economic development.  We learned that the Gedeo people live in the richest coffee growing area in the world.

That day, a group of individuals committed to the belief that we could begin to make a difference for this man and his people.  If the endeavor was successful, a model worth repeating could be created to benefit others around the world.  Benevolent Bean is the outgrowth of that commitment.  Predicated on the belief that the majority of the income created by a person’s hard work should be returned to that person, Benevolent Bean returns sixty percent of its net profits from the sale of coffee to health, education, and economic development programs for the farmers and their families.
